Origins of Flite
The idea for a motorised hydrofoil arrived on a windless day in 2016 as a 'lightbulb moment.' Flite's founder, former kite-surfing world record holder and serial entrepreneur David Trewern, was at a kitefoiling event when he thought: ‘What if I didn’t have to wait for the wind. What if I could just attach an electric motor to my foil?’
That dream became a sketch and the kitchen table, a workshop. The 3D printer went into overdrive and late nights became early mornings. Dozens of prototypes later, David flew for the first time. “It was magical. The feeling of freedom was like nothing else.”
Like many new things, similar ideas developed concurrently in different parts of the world. Electric motors and batteries had developed to the point that the propulsion system could be light and powerful enough to be attached to the wing itself, under the water, and provide enough speed to lift the board.
In September 2017, David took his drone out to Belongil and filmed his first ride on a Fliteboard. A worldwide buzz ensued, driving him to create a business from what was initially a passion project. A month later, the website was launched and the first employee was hired.

Sustainability
At Flite, we are continually innovating and developing new technologies that, when scaled, have the potential to create a future of quiet, clean ocean enjoyment and water transport.
Fliteboards are able to carry an 80kg human at foiling speed using less than 700 watts of battery powered electricity. They are quiet above the water, and have an underwater acoustic profile that is significantly less impactful than even the smallest petrol marine motor. They are manufactured to commercial grade and built to last.

History of eFoils
Fliteboard was an original idea developed by our Founder David Trewern in 2016. Like many new things, similar ideas developed concurrently in different parts of the world. And from further research, we now know that there is quite a story to the first origins of the eFoil.
2008
At KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Sweden, Professor Jacob Kuttenkeuler and students develop one of the earliest electric hydrofoil concepts as part of a naval architecture program.

2009
After working on it for two semesters, they came up with the first electric hydrofoil, which was successfully demonstrated in the spring of 2009.

2016
David Trewern sketches the first Fliteboard prototype.
Stand-up electric hydrofoil concepts begin emerging independently around the world.
2017
David films his first Fliteboard ride at Belongil Beach. The video sparks global attention.
Flite launches its website and begins building a team, turning a passion project into a company.
2018
Flite begins shipping boards globally, establishing early leadership in the emerging eFoil category.
A dedicated European General Manager is appointed, marking the start of Flite’s international expansion.
2019
Fliteboard becomes a global phenomenon, surpassing 2 million website visits, as it’s named “Innovation of the Year” in the Australia by Design series, along with other major design awards.
Flite opens its New York office, expanding into North America.
2020
Flite App launches, introducing ride tracking, GPS replay and performance data to electric foiling.
Flite establishes European distribution in the Netherlands.
Fliteboard receives 6 more international awards, including the coveted Red Dot Best of the Best award.
2021
Series 2 introduces refined electronics, ULTRA (the world’s smallest eFoil), True Glide and the first dihedral eFoil wings.
Flite hosts the first international Flite Cup race. Won by Tom Court, Performance Team Rider.
A Fliteboard customer, Rob Wylie, completes the first English Channel crossing on a single battery.
2022
Series 2.2 launches and advances propulsion efficiency, the Flitecell Titanium range and introduces competitive online leaderboards within Flite App.
Performance Team Riders Tom Court and Glyn Ovens put Fliteboard to the test at Nazaré, taking on some of the world’s biggest waves.
Rob Wylie sets a 40 km / 25 mile single-battery distance record in the Maldives.
Flite hosts the first North American Flite Cup in Florida, won by Performance Team Rider Justin Chait.
Flite is recognised as one of TIME’s Best Inventions and continues its streak of international design awards.
2023
Series 3 introduces the lightest performance eFoil in the world (ULTRA L), the world’s lightest lithium-ion eFoil battery (Flitecell Nano), the smallest eFoil jet (Flite Jet) and the world’s first interchangeable propulsion system (Dual Drive).
Flitescooter comes to market, expanding accessibility and welcoming more riders to the category.
Brunswick Corporation acquires Fliteboard, marking a pivotal moment as electric foiling integrates into the global marine industry under Mercury Marine.
2024
Flite launches FLITELab*, a dedicated R&D division focused on next-generation foil-assist propulsion systems for surf, wing and downwind disciplines.
Series 4 presents all new eFoils designed for the conical wing range, and a new board construction called Soft Top, offering riders more durability, grip and comfort.
Flite x Marc Newson launches, combining the world-renowned industrial designer with high-modulus pre-preg carbon fibre/fiber construction.
2025
Series 5 launches Flite Jet 2, developed in collaboration with Mercury Marine.
FLITELab* enters the market with AMPJet and a new range of high-performance foils, expanding Flite’s innovation into both foil-assist propulsion and advanced unpowered foiling.
Customer Malakai Lamby, sets a 67 km / 42 mile single-battery distance record in open water on Fliteboard.
Flite continues its unbroken streak of annual awards, with notable wins from the Red Dot Design Award, German Design Awards and iF Design Awards.
2026
Flite launches the world’s fastest Fliteboard, RACE, developed with renowned propulsion experts Mercury Racing.
Series 6 refines the range with ULTRA L3, Soft Top 2 and the renaming of the original Fliteboard as ICON — honouring its place in category history.
Flite wins Gold at the German Design Awards for UL2, while Fliteboard RACE earns Gold at the iF Design Awards and Best Foiling Board / Water Toy (Powered) at the Foiling Awards.
